BJ Sports is pleased to announce our waterfowl hunting operation.

   080202a.jpg (155778 bytes)

From September 1 through mid-February, we can get you out on some outstanding duck and goose hunts with almost no off days.  We can do this is because we hunt in both Michigan and Indiana and between the two states, we have nearly 180 consecutive days of waterfowl hunting available to us.

You'll hunt private fields and water blinds and are welcome to hunt over your own decoys without supervision in certain locations, or if you prefer to have a guide do all the work for you, we have them available upon request.  NOTE:  All Indiana hunts are guided.

Send email with any questions or to reserve a date.

DUCK HUNTING

All Michigan duck hunts include breakfast in the blind (eggs, sausage, coffee) and appropriate beverages to enjoy during and after the hunt.

Experience big-water hunting in little-water comfort.  From our private blinds of solid wooden construction (suitable for four hunters and a dog, and including a camouflaged 'boat garage'), you'll take mallards, wood ducks, bluebills, ring necks, bufflehead, redheads, and even teal, shoveller, pintail, or other uncommon ducks on occasion.

The North Lake at Grand Mere rests just outside the boundaries of the state park and is less than 1/2 mile off Lake Michigan with a direct channel to the Big Lake.  It is a shallow-ish body so you'll need a boat that can run shallow and has enough muscle to get you back to the launch against a 40 mph gale (wind speeds of 20 - 50 mph are not uncommon on the shores of Lake Michigan in November).

Blind 1 - Lake Michigan is about 500 yards to the left behind the trees and sand dunes. Blind 2 - Sits on the entrance to the channel connecting North Lake to Middle Lake.

You'll also want to be sure to bring a minimum of two-to-four dozen bluebill decoys to go with another two-to-four dozen  mallards.  When hunting here, more decoys is definitely better.  And if you need to buy more decoys, you can always swing by BJ Sports just a short six-mile drive from the blind.

If you are hunting unguided you are welcome to use the blind all day, but remember to haul your trash out with you.  Also remember you will be held responsible for any damage done to the blind during your hunt (we check the blind before and after each hunt for trash and damage).  And again, guides are available if you'd rather hunt over their spread.  Advanced reservations are required and additional costs will apply.

From the boat launch to Blind 2.  Blind 1 is just out of view to the left.  Lake Michigan is less than a half-mile to the left.

After setting out your decoys, just pull your boat into the 'boat garage' at the back of the blind and step into a wind-resistant blind sitting about two feet above the water.  There are dog ramps at the front of each blind for easy retrievals.

This is some of the finest duck hunting in southwestern Michigan.  The birds literally pour into these lakes during the migration, especially when those November gales have Lake Michigan kicked up.  It should also be noted that the Grand Mere lakes are a RESTING area, NOT roosting lakes.  This is important because you get new birds every day (with the possible exception of local mallards) so hunting consecutive days here is not only possible, but productive.  Canada geese can also be taken but not with the regularity of ducks.

Other duck hunting opportunities include river hunts in northern Indiana.  This hunt will require the use of a guide and you should plan on lodging in or near South Bend if you'll be spending the night.

GOOSE HUNTING

Warm-weather hunting in September with five-bird limits.  Fall hunting in October, November, and December with leaves falling, a nip in the air, watching your breath float away, and even the occasional snow flake, generally with two-bird limits.  And then there's January and February hunting where you'll need every stitch of clothing you have (and you may still feel like your niblits are freezing off), but with another five-bird limit reward.

Hunt corn, beans, alfalfa, ponds, and rivers for our huge local giant geese (the biggest we've taken is 18 lbs) and the late-fall migrants.  We have over 3,000 acres available to us, in total, so we offer ample opportunity to enjoy that exciting sound of autumn as a flock of Canada geese lock into your decoys.

MICHIGAN'S LATE SEASON GOOSE HUNTS:  This season usually runs from the first weekend in January to the first weekend in February and can be cold and nasty, but also very productive.  Again, we have guides who can take you to hot fields and we have fields where you can hunt on your own without a guide, using your own gear, of course.

Indiana has a two-week season that starts in early February.  These are geese that aren't used to being hunted after Christmas, so they're fairly easy to convince.

Again, we hunt both Michigan and Indiana and have several guides available so we can almost always get you out on the date you want.  In most cases, temporary blinds are used so bring your layout or other portable blinds with you if you'll be hunting on your own.  This does not apply to any water hunts we may take you on, most of which occur in Indiana.
