For
the week ending Sunday, August 31:
Chinook
were taken off both St. Joe piers last week, mostly in the wee hours with
2:00 – 5:00 AM being best. The most productive lures
were KO Wobblers (Blue
& White Glow) and Little Cleos (Pearl with Pink Dots).
However, toward
the end of this reporting period, temperatures were rising
again and the fish seemed to move back to deeper water where the
boats have been finding them as far out as 170 - 200 feet of
water.
Perch
were taken in good numbers off
Jean
Klock
Park
. Fishermen in
shallower water seemed to be doing best with reports of some
excellent numbers of nice fish being taken in 10 – 20 feet of
water.
The
river, while still low, has Chinook and skamania lurking around
the creek mouths. They
were a little harder to take this week due to the warmer temps,
but it may be worth a try. Flies, Flatfish, Hot 'N' Tots,
and Wobble Glos might be your best bets, although Oslos, KO
Wobblers, and Cleos could be just the thing. Wiggle Warts
with a bit of chartreuse on them took some kings at the mouth of
the Paw Paw River.
If you want
to try something a little different, try pitching a Loco (gold
or orange/prism) and retrieving it like a jerk bait. This
tactic also works well on the piers when the fish are on the
bottom and fussy (blue/prism is a good one for Lake Michigan
fishing).
Some
big cats were pulled in using bluegill cut-bait (41 lbs being
the biggest brought to BJ’s) and anglers in the know were
getting into some nice walleye and smallmouth action on live
crawlers, Hot 'N' Tots, and Jackall FlickShake worms.
On
the inland lakes, Bo's Bluegill Buster has been reigning havoc
on deep-dwelling gills while Yamamoto Senkos and Jackall
FlickShakes, Girons, and TN/70s have been beating up bass.
There are also some nice crappie being taken with minnows and
jigs. But if you're going panfishing, go down a few feet
for the big ones.
