BJ Sports was established in Scottdale, Michigan (a suburb of St. Joseph) in the early 1970s by Ron Both. Over the next 30-plus years, BJ Sports became known as the place to shop for hunting and fishing gear in southwestern Michigan.

At Ron's passing in 2007, the store was purchased by Ed Sommers of South Bend, Indiana and is managed by John Speckine of Buchanan, Michigan. Competitive prices and friendly, knowledgeable service is our goal.

February 2012 will see major changes to the BJ Sports interior. The layout is being changed to make the store more roomy.

We're going to move the center aisles to the sides of the store and open up the center giving us room to display blinds, etc., and giving you room to walk.

A foyer will be built as an entry-way where we will post maps and DNR notices.

A "Liar's Lounge" will be established where you can enjoy complimentary hot drinks while telling yarns of hunting and fishing trips past - or just sit and watch a ballgame on TV.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget that, here at BJ Sports, fishermen caught telling truth will be soundly flogged!!

SPECIAL ORDERS

We will stock the hottest selling items for our area, but if we don't have the item you want in our inventory, we'll be happy to do a special order for you with NO added charges - not even shipping.

In most cases, we'll have your item within a week.

We will accept payment for your special order at the time the order is made. If we are unable to fulfill your order, for any reason, we will refund your money.

CURRENT PRODUCTS

FISHERMEN: We carry rods, reels, rubber baits, plugs, crankbaits, tackle boxes, landing nets, terminal tackle and ice fishing gear. We also have lure parts available for those wishing to create their own lures.

HUNTERS: Guns, air rifles, ammo, scents, deer baits (yes, we carry Deer Crack), cases, blinds, calls, optics, trail cameras, black powder, traps, broadheads, cleaning supplies and other various items like camping chairs and rain gear are available.

Most archery supplies like bows, crossbows, bolts, arrows, releases, etc., along with reloading supplies, are available by special order only.

WADERS & BOOTS: We have both fishing and hunting waders.

We also have Ranger knee boots with 1000 grams of Thinsulate and we have the famous "Mickey Mouse" boots rated to less than 20-below zero.

LAY-AWAY: Our lay-away program is simple: 25% down and 25% every 30 days, so your purchase is paid for in 90 days.

NEW PRODUCT LINES

Along with the interior improvements being made this winter, BJ Sports will restock with our usual top sellers along with new product lines with which we hope to attract new hunters and fishermen to the store.

Fishermen will see new lines of fishing rods, for example, such as Rogue River and St. Croix. A wider selection of reels, mid-range and high-end, will be on display. You can even expect to see a nice rowboat leaning in the corner. And don't rule out a boat and trailer combo being displayed in the store from time to time.

Hunters will be please to see displays of Buck knives and Wildlife Research scents. Foiles calls and other top-line products will also be added, to include a wider variety of hunting wear.

...ONLINE... ...STORE...

We anticipate having the BJ Sports ONLINE STORE live and ready for orders by the end of February or in early March. Selected items will be available for purchase and shipping direct to your home.

You will order and pay online, and we will get your order shipped as soon as possible.

Not all items in our physical store will be active in the online store, but you can still order them online.

There will be a "Special Order" feature available so you can write-in an item not included on our site. No payment will be required on these items until we contact you to confirm that we can get the product and ship it to your home. At that time, we will accept your credit card information to pay for the item, before shipping.

CONSIGNMENTS, ETC.

BJ Sports is pleased to offer our high-traffic location to help our customers sell their guns, bows, boats, RVs, campers and ATVs.

Items displayed outside the store will be charged a monthly fee of $25. Those we can display inside the store will be charged $10 per month. These charges do NOT apply to guns and bows.

GUNS & BOWS: You tell us how much YOU need in YOUR pocket when the item is sold. Anything we can get over that number is ours, but we absolutely will NOT sell your item for less than you say you need - unless we have your personal authorization to do so. GUNS IN STOCK

RVs, CAMPERS, BOATS: These will be on display in our west parking lot. You set your asking price and give us the lowest amount you'll accept. Upon sale of your time, BJ Sports will accept 10% of the total selling price.

ATVs, SMALL BOATS: We display these items, when practical, inside the store in the newly created open floor area so they can receive more views by our customers. Again, BJ Sports get 10% of the final selling price.

FINS & FEATHERS OUTFITTERS

BJ Sports has partnered with local long-time guide service Big Lake Outdoors to create Fins & Feathers Hunting & Fishing Outfitters - our new outfitter service. We run hunts and fish in both Michigan and Indiana.

HUNTING: Fins & Feathers offers guided trips for ducks, geese, deer, turkey, elk and bear. Unguided trips are also available for waterfowl, deer and turkey.

FISHING: Fins & Feathers offers both guides and charters. We will guide you from shore for trout, salmon, walleye and perch. Other species are available upon request.

If you would prefer to take a charter on Lake Michigan or the St. Joseph River, we can accommodate. We are authorized to book trips for several local charter captains.

LAND LEASES: We have land available for daily, weekly and seasonal lease where you can hunt ducks, geese, deer or turkey.

One of our properties is available for year-round lease. On this property you can hunt all of the above: ducks, geese, deer and turkey, as well as fish for steelhead, coho, chinook, pike and other species in the river which serves as the northern property line.

LODGING: We have a furnished cottage available for rent from September to December. Amenities include hot showers, full kitchen, cable TV, easy access to Lake Michigan (about 1/4 mile) and the duck blind we lease for unguided hunts (making the cottage a perfect lodging choice for those on unguided duck hunts).

BOOKINGS: Discounts are available for early bookings. Call the store to reserve your date(s).
